01 The managers
One card per stint: a club that changed manager mid-season carries a
card per spell, each measured only on its own matches.

How a manager is measured — and what it is not
Attribution. Every built 2025/26 match is assigned to
the stint whose tenure window contains it; a committed seed table (derived from FotMob's
per-match coach block, then curated) provides the windows, and each match's observed coach name
re-verifies them. Stints under 6 measured matches fall back to the
club's season profile, flagged (season) .
The fingerprint. Direction and territory come from the pass tables (long-ball
share, final-third share, open-play crosses), pressing from a PPDA-style count (opponent passes in
their own 60% per defensive action there), line height from mean
defensive-action distance up the pitch, and the chance axes from Understat match xG. Each axis is
a percentile across all Big-5 stints. What we can't see: off-ball runs, true
possession share and tempo — those axes simply don't exist here rather than being faked.
The philosophy is derived, not asserted. Eight classic system signatures
(Gegenpress, Tiki-Taka, Catenaccio…) are expressed as weight vectors over the fingerprint axes;
a manager wears whichever their measured style is closest to (cosine), with the margin as
confidence. A 50% -confidence label means "closest of eight", not
"textbook example".
